Retractable Awning Considerations
January 1, 2019
Retractable awnings are an attractive addition that can add style to a home or business and make it stand out from the rest. Awnings are also highly functional, and can provide shelter from the elements and create a delightful space to relax or wait. Retractable awnings provide the convenience of being able to draw the awning in when more sunlight is desired or during severe weather conditions. Before making a final decision about the retractable awning to be purchased, however, there are several factors that should be considered.
Size of the Awning
The size of the awning may dictate certain things about the frame requirements, as awnings that are larger or protrude farther may require stronger arms or additional supports. This can impact the total price of the awning as well as the appearance of the finished product. Home or business owners should measure the area that will be covered by the awning before pricing and comparing awnings. This will help to narrow down the selection of awnings, and give customers the best idea of what the awning will look like when it is actually installed.
Awning Use
A retractable awning generally provides protection from the sun or rain. Retractable awnings may be handy in places where high winds are common, as the retractable feature of the awning will allow home or business owners to decrease the risks associated with awning detachment in high winds while enjoying the protection offered by the awning when storms are not immediately eminent. However, home or business owners that wish to use awnings during winter storms or require a higher level of protection may wish to consider awnings that are made of more sturdy materials.
Retraction Mechanism
There are a variety of different motorized or manual options for retractable awnings. Remote control operated awnings may be convenient, but may present a complication if the remote control is lost. Awnings than operate using a wall switch or button are often the most suitable option for both homes and businesses. However, electrical failures may inhibit the ability to close the awning. This should be considered in areas where power outages frequently occur during peak seasons for awning use. Manual awnings may require more effort, but may be more cost effective to install and maintain. Manual awnings may also help home and business owners avoid the downfalls of aging electrical motors.
Awning Quality
The retractable awning quality should also be considered before making a purchase. A lower upfront cost may seem desirable, but a lower quality awning may require more costly repairs or even replacement in the future as parts wear out and the fabric fades. High quality awnings may last 25 years or more, while low quality awnings may last five years or less. A high quality retractable awning may be an investment that will add appeal to a home or business for many years to come.
