Don’t Let Cold Weather Ruin Your Plans: Fun Family Activities for Fall

January 1, 2019

The fall season in New England is an exciting time for families who can take advantage of the crisp air and engage in some family fun. From pumpkin harvests to fall festivals, there is so much to do that it can be hard to squeeze it all in before winter’s arrival. Here are some of the top weather-proof activities that create beautiful memories for your family even though the weather turns colder.

Visit an Apple Orchard

Apple picking is one of the New England’s main attractions in the fall. However, apple picking is not the only activity your family can enjoy at an orchard. According to the BostonGlobe, many New England apple orchards have restaurants and bakeries available for your family to sample some home-baked goods. Holiday shops, petting zoos and hay rides are a few more activities the whole family can enjoy.

Go for a Foliage Drive

In early fall, many families enjoy cycling through New England neighborhoods to catch a glimpse of the changing colors of the leaves. If the air has turned too chilly for a family bike ride, then consider going for a drive. In New Hampshire, your family can take a ride through the Kancamagus Scenic Highway to enjoy the view of the White Mountain National Forest in the fall. Alternatively, you can sign up for one of the many tours provided throughout New England this time of year so that you can sit back and enjoy the ride.

Enjoy a Harvest Dinner

The harvest bounty in New England includes apples, pumpkins and many other seasonal delights that are always better when they are shared. If your family would enjoy a historical dinner, then Discover New England recommends a visit to Plimoth Plantation in Plymouth, Massachusetts where you can participate in a public reenactment of a 1600s-style dinner. If Plymouth is too far away, then gather your family and friends for a harvest dinner prepared with fall produce from your local market.

As the weather turns colder, it is still not too late to enjoy the best views and activities in New England. By planning around the weather and finding indoor venues where you can sample produce from the fall harvest, you can keep the excitement going well into the winter season.
