6 Frequently Asked Questions about Awning Installation

January 1, 2019

While our trained professionals are the ones handling your awning installation, you still want to know what the process entails, what your options are, and what you can expect afterward. We want our customers to be fully educated before the awning installation process, so our installation professionals can make sure they get the job done to your exact specifications. Home and business owners want their awnings to not only be aesthetically pleasing, but also to serve their desired function, and having an understanding of common installation questions will help you choose the perfect awning for your needs. Here are some of our most frequently asked questions.

What’s the difference between awning materials?

There are indeed some important differences in awning fabrics, depending on their intended use. The material, coatings, weaves, and finish all directly impact the quality and durability. For example, acrylic fabrics are popular for residential use, due to their cloth-like appearance, whereas vinyl fabrics are more popular for commercial buildings, as they are the most resistant to water.

How durable are awning support frames?

Metal support frames are made from either galvanized steel or aluminum and can easily last a lifetime. They do, however, require regular maintenance, including inspection of fasteners, connections, and the condition of the metal.

How long does it take to build an awning?

While the time will vary depending on the awning, it can be as little as three weeks for canvas awnings. In summertime, which is our most popular season with the highest demand, it’s common for building to take a little longer.

Will my awning be able to handle high winds?

Retractable awnings are primarily meant to provide sun protection, and should not be relied upon in windy conditions. However, awnings have been known to withstand winds over 50mph, so you should use your own judgment when it comes to whether you should expose your awning to a storm. If the wind is mild enough for you to sit outside without disruption, it probably won’t cause your awning any issues.

Is there a minimum height for awning installation?

The minimum height for awning installation is eight feet. Anything less will require the unit to be roof-mounted.  Contrary to some concerns, roof mount brackets do not create any water trap, and safely allow water and snow to pass.

Will a patio awning do damage to my wall?

While awnings do exert a certain level of stress on the walls to which they are mounted, sturdy and up-to-code buildings should not experience any damage. We always advise customers to keep an eye on their walls, and make not of any changes, however minor.
